Application for Exploration Zero
Character Name: Hanatarou Yamada
Canon: Bleach
Canon Point: Chapter 301, where he is slashed across the chest by Rukia's puppetered form
Age: Physically around 19. Headcanonly, I pin him around 200.
Why do you feel this character would be appropriate for this setting?: In Hanatarou's canon, he has had to go through threats from a young age; from his brother's bullying attitude, to being a snack for any hollow (a spiritual creature that eases its pains by eating those related to them as well as those with higher then average spiritual energy), to being considered little better then canon fodder by more martial oriented individuals. He has learned to adopt and survive since then, and from his previous game he has been taken from, Hell Pointe, Hanatarou has had to go through various emotional and physical duress. He was at most points the only fully trained healer within Hellpointe, and had to look out for most of the town for emergency medical treatment. It's helped in maturing him, as well as more flexible and prepared for what dangers may lie ahead.
Background/History: Note that I follow the manga, not the anime filler.
Previous Game History: Hanatarou is coming from the game called hell pointe. Characters in this horror setting were trapped in a coastal town known as Bell Pointe, and had to rely on one another through a series of natural diseasters, monsters, and zombies. The people trapped within also had to go against a Egyptian Priest named Hehsebamon, nick named the cannibal. The cannibal seemed impervious to harm, and required sacrifices. At one point, shortly before Hanatarou's arrival to Bell Pointe, Hehsebamcon kidnapped various people and harvested organs for a ritual. This includes an eye, part of a liver and lung.
While in Bell Pointe, Hanatarou had to work with and around people that came from his world and from others. One zone of contention was Aizen; he was frightened of the other shinigami and his capabilities, despite their powers being halved in this world. He was well aware of the gap among them, and was happy at the time to agree with a truce-which approximately applied to all individuals of the town, as none of them could leave.
Hanatarou learned about technology and modern living, hospitals and cafes, and met all sorts of people. During his time in Bell Pointe, he has had cope with storms, depraved of food supplies, flooding up to the first floor of a building, heavy fog for a week (with hallucinogens then monsters inside!), zombie maids, rabies, heaven smiles (man like golem creatures that explode on contact) as well as other horrors. He's learned without knowing if he survived or not that the war with Aizen has finished, and that his friend Ichigo sacrificed his power to do so.
In short, he has developed to be a little more reliable, gotten his share of things he does not want to see again, and reaffirmed the fact that the worst monsters wear human skin.
He has CR with some figures, including: Travis Touchdown, Hope Estheim, Deadpool (though not the current one), Cynthia (Claymore), Cousland, Elaine Belloc (Lucifer DC series), Crowley (Good Omens) among others.
What are they bringing? (limit 3) His Zanpakuto Hisagomaru, his empty medical back pack.
Abilities/Powers: His known abilities are listed below, starting with his katana, as it is a conduct for his powers:
Zanpakuto: Hisagomaru (a Katana with a blue handle and a circular guard with a brown sphere or bag attached to it. There is a gauge that goes up the blade, which will be explained below)
Power: When the blade touches the flesh of an injury, it is healed. At the same time, the gauge fills with a red gas/energy. Smaller wounds will barely fill the gauge at all, while Encroachment (the process of which a ghost becomes a Hollow) is great enough to fill instantly the gauge. When the meter on his blade fills up, the blade automatically goes into the second mode (Akeiro Hisagomaru, which is smaller, the size of a scalpel), and unleashes all the wounds absorbed onto the target Hanataro designates with a slashing movement. The attack is similar to a Cero (energy blast). After doing this once, Hanataro may attack again, not needing to heal further; however, it would be difficult, due to Akeiro Hisagomaru's small size.
Healer: He is an above average healer, with the ability to restore the spiritual energy, and the ability for the body to function after injury. He uses, just like others of his company, treatments and techniques that could be compared to the human medical world. However, unlike the human world, he is able to heal his patients within a night, even hours of the trauma that has occurred.
Endurance: Considerable. He had to heal more than one person from the point of near death in the space of a few days, at least to the point they could defend themselves. As well, he was able to partake of a considerable amount of activity, and was able to keep on going despite only having a few hours sleep and a placebo for energy.
Swordsmanship: Though no expert by any means, he at least has the basics of sword to sword combat, to have attained some level of shikai-which is the way of releasing the lesser abilities of his Zanpakuto.
Hand to hand combat: Currently unknown, and as such, considered nil.
Shunpo (flash step teleportion type steps): Nil. Still Needs to walk everywhere, and needs to enhance his natural speed before being able to use it at all.
Kido: He is a proficient skill in Kido. Hanataro has been known to use spells as high as the mid sixties (kido spells are known to go to 90s, possibly higher. The way it goes is that the higher the number, the harder it is to cast). Whether he could do it higher is unknown, but should be considered to have at least some skill in defending himself with the use of kido.
Memorization: He was able to memorize the tunnels underneath Soul Society with ease, and has the knowledge of where most supplies are kept. Once he knows a place or a technique, he is unlikely to forget.
Cleaning: I say this as he seems to have some ability to clean well, at least to the point of pleasing the nobility. He seems to know how to do regular house work. It would be likely that he would apply this to his medical abilities, as sterile environments are best for healing.
Sixth sense/Second sight/whatever may apply: Hanatarou, as he is of the supernatural himself, is able to see ghosts, hollows, and other supernatural subjects clearly in the mundane world.
Herbal Skills: He knows how to make a variety of poultices and teas that can ease aches, headaches, speed healing, etc, which he uses with his other healing skills.
Personality: This tiny little shinigami is not someone who appears overly confident at first glance. He appears forgettable with his generic name and meek demeanor. Being quiet, a follower of orders and strong personalities, Hanatarou could easily be over looked. When he does stand out in a situation, it's due to being gullible, clumsy and seemingly spacey, making him the perfect target for bullies. This not only applies to the rivalries that apply to the other companies, but within his own group. He is often pranked and teased, and Hanatarou reacts, every time. It does not help that due to chronic overwork and working on placbo supplements Hanatarou tends to be teering on the edge of exhaustion at the best of times.
This may be what Hanatarou tends to appear to strangers and bullies. However, he has a well spring of unexpected depths people may be surprised to find at a second glance. It's not just the sweetness of his nature that lays close to his bones; it's not just the open mind he keeps towards strangers (even those that tried to use him for their own gain).
When he is not being painfully scatterbrained, Hanatarou can have a subtle, intelligent mind. If he cannot tackle a problem directly, he will go around it. If he can plan in advance, with the best plan to ensure no one uses excessive force, he will. He swiped the keys for the prison he was raiding, led his former captors through a series of tunnels underground, and most importantly he stayed out of fights he knew he could not take on by himself. In a series that is filled with over powered, quick-to-violence characters it's not just smart; its a survival trait. It is also a mark for the streak of realism. For all that he dislikes his inability to fight like other cast members, he also realizes it is better to live and run, then to stay and die. He also realizes that in the world he lives in-a military company poised to defend those unable to defend themselves-people are going to get hurt, and/or die. While he does not happen, and would do just about anything to ensure the survival of his comrades and friends, there is the knowledge that when it comes to battles or wars, people can, and will die easily.
That is not to say he is unaffected by seeing people hurt, emotionally or physically; far from it. Hanatarou does cry out in panic at the thought of someone taking on a foe they may not be able to defeat, and be emotionally moved by the retelling of certain events. However, the small man does not allow emotions to overrule good sense and force him to take impulsive actions. Though his initial reaction may be to rush in to help or at the very least pull his friend out of trouble, he can and will be talked out of taking action if reasoned with. Hanatarou, until a certain point of his life, always followed the rules, surprising and disappointing his captain when he was discovered helping the outsiders to rescue Rukia Kuchiki, a prisoner to be executed. He honestly did not realize it was was possible he could break the rules.
Hanatarou never thought that he would get off scott free for giving Ichigo, Ganju and Rukia his assistance. He would receive a sentence that he deserved for his crime. It's part of his realism, but it can also be attributed to his humility as well. Hanatarou is politely modest-excessively modest, even given his culture and station in life. Often, he seems to think nothing of his modesty, and is genuinely taken aback when he is treated well.
To be honest, Hanatarou is surprised when he is treated as something other then a doormat. Though it has not been confirmed in canon, it is possible that the sub-par treatment of Hana could have started with his brother Seinosuke Yamada, who not only was more powerful then his little brother, but is known for having a 'bad character'. Either way, a good or bad person or not, Hanatarou may have a slight inferiority complex, due to his brother. He may think that every time someone praises him, he may be both judging himself, and the standards of the higher seats. When he is praised for his skill, he waves it off, commenting how it could be done better by another, or that it's the only thing he can do.
Which is not the case. Hanatarou constantly underestimates himself. When given a life he has to preserve and/or save with his healing abilities, he is confident, firm, and assured of himself; it is something he can do, so he does his best to ensure he can do it.
And yet, when faced with a situation where he could run and try again another day, he decided to lay humbly down his life to give a chance for Rukia to get away. He did not have a weapon on his person. He could have used kido, but the fact was, he would be easily overpowered if not killed. All to give a prisoner and his former captor a chance to escape.
It may be presumed that this was spurned on by romantic or deep platonic feelings. It could even be thought that it was due to thinking he did not count, or that he would only get in the way of the escape.
Not so, for all those feelings may have had an influence for his choice. One only has to look far back to his stagnated life, and look to Rukia's initial treatment of him, when he first met her in the prison cell. Though a noble, clearly more powerful and greater potential then he, Rukia treated him as an equal. More than that, she treated him like a person. It started the change, subtle as it is to 'I can't' to 'I can'. When Ichigo presented the opportunity to rescue Rukia, Hanatarou could not pass it up. Ichigo and the others who invaded Soul Society showed that life (or the after life) can change; he is more then just a clog in the system.
Outwardly, when we see Hanatarou again, he does not seem to have changed; he is still nervous, still quiet and submissive. However, he does have the grumptation to complain to a man he was scared witless of months before. He was also silently annoyed by being called an eyesore-something that would have been taken as his due before the prison break.
With Hanatarou, it's all in the (pun intended) little things.
Happiest Memory: Rukia telling him she did not expect to be called 'sama'; to speak to her as an equal.
Worst Memory:
List of fears: Being forgot, getting friends hurt, letting people down, making a bad situation worse, being unable to help, being helpless, inability to heal, loud noises, people with strong personalities(?), surprises? He is the most pranked shinigami for a reason...
Regrets:
He regrets in not being stronger, in not having more offensive abilities. He wants to be more of a help in a fight, but finds it is a long road to walk, so to speak.
He regrets being easily frightened, even with just cause. He knows it looks weak, he knows he can move passeded it, but fear can cause panic.
He regrets having difficulty in changing his attitude of being able change his life, and effect the events around him.
1st Person Sample Entry: Oh dear. What am I going to do with all the boxes? This is not what I wanted or needed!
Eeeh....oh no, I already have it on!
Forgive me people of this...this place. House? Area? Mansion? I am not sure what is the best word for where we are...it's so small and big at the same time! S-sorry, I am rambling. My name is Hanatarou Yamada. It's very nice to meet you all! If you've been somewhere called Bell Pointe, please talk to me soon!
To, um, get to the point of this call? I found some boxes, but they are not what I am looking for. If anyone has any medical supplies, I would be happy to trade!
Thank you so much for your time, and for listening!
3rd Person Sample Entry:
He thought he had been dreaming again. He had horrible dreams before; they were par for the course sometimes, in Bell Pointe. He remembered one where he had been drowning under ice, and unable to breathe; he remembered the one where he had been caught in the fog, and something kept circling him. There had been the one where Cynthia and the others died horribly over and over. And the one with a well. He hated that one. The last dream, he could never wake up from.
But this place was no dream. It was a strange place. A large house in the woods? Why would anyone make a house here? No one did that. He had walked around the outside, tried to see if there were any hell butterflies about. No such luck. Another place, another trap. Another way to be cut off from the familiarity of home. Had it really only been twenty four days since he had been cut down by Rukia's puppeted hands? It had felt like months. Maybe closer to a year, even.
He did not know. But this place was real. Dreams never had texture. They did not feel like rough stone; they never had the feeling of springy grass under his feet. No smell of vegetation, living and dead. There was no smell of the sea. This was the world of the living still, and this was not Bell Pointe. He was on his own again.
He glanced down at the device on his wrist. Light that was bright as fire but a strange green told him the time. Hanatarou glanced up at the sky; he supposed that was about the right time. It looked like it was so. No one was pulling his leg. Not yet, at any rate. Strangely enough, the lack of pranking made him think and long for home. He hated the boxes that sprang out with just about anything to frighten him at the time; he knew he was being laughed at, not with. But that was...normal. Something was as regular as sand trickling through the hourglass, or someone needing medical care. Was there no reason for him to be home, to be plunked in a place that looked like a giant cage?
It started to drizzle lightly. He checked with his palm to feel the light raindrops patter onto his skin. With a roll of his shoulders, Hanatarou Yamada moved forward, towards the only shelter he knew of in this strange, strange place.
Maybe one day he would go home. But not today.
